COVID UPDATE – APRIL 2020

Thanks to the amazing support of Abaana donors we have currently raised over £15,000 in a week towards the COVID– 19 Response.

Our staff have been speaking with some of the families on the ground and this is what we have been hearing back about their needs:

  • Speaking with one mother she said, “We have survived the past 32 days, but I don’t know how we are going to make it in the next 3 weeks of lock down. We have been struggling, but the children would get what little we have to eat but now I don’t know what to do. I pray that God in His mercies He will provide.”
  • One of our sponsored children said, “Life is too hard, sometimes we can even take 2 days without food. I wish I was at school. I was sure of food but here I am losing hope.” Her mother also added the concern that their rent is now due.

We have been sending emergency Grants to some of our sponsored children’s families that we cannot reach with food parcels, but can get money to. This will allow them to purchase food and essential items.

The team are arranging various ways to get food and essentials to other families which include food pick ups (where safe to do) and working with local councillors to reach people in the community.

We are initially targeting support for around 200 sponsored families connected with our schools (around 1,000 people), but the more support we have the more people we can reach.

Abaana have teamed with CRANE network and Kampala city council to help accommodate around 250 children at a temporary camp in a local Primary school.

The children that are living on the streets of Kampala are hugely vulnerable all the time. But when the shops close and people are staying at home, these already malnourished children, many of whom are sick, are some of the first to face extreme dangers during lockdown.

All the children arriving (150 to date) receive medical screening, hot meals and a mattress to sleep on.

Abaana have already supplied 130 mattresses and assorted food items and Vicent Tugume, our interim social worker, is currently on the ground and will be resident onsite for 14 days.
