Kadok Primary School

  • A brighter future for the children of Kadok

A brighter future for the children of Kadok

Kadok Primary School is in the East of Uganda, where over half the population lives in multidimensional poverty. That means more than just a lack of money. Families struggle to access clean water, healthcare, and the most basic education. It is very common for children to walk many miles each day to the nearest school—if there is one at all. Others stay at home, their futures limited not by potential, but by their birth location.

In Kadok, the local community under the church of Uganda took action and started a school themselves. They have been running now for three years with very limited resources.

We want to raise £90,000 to help build them a new school, and the great news is that we only need £40,000 more to reach our target! Will you be part of this dream?

On a recent visit to Uganda, I sat with a group of children under the sweltering mid–morning sun. The temperature had already climbed past 35°C. A hot wind whipped through the village, offering no relief—just clouds of dust that stuck to your skin and filled the air.

Thirty children crammed into a 20–square–meter classroom built from wood and mud. The blackboard was just a fragment of a board that had once been whole, now worn and splintered. Dust was everywhere—on the desks, in the air, coating the floor.

I asked, “What would you be excited about if you got a new school?” One child replied with something I’ll never forget:  “I’m excited because we won’t have to smear dung on the floor every Friday.”

Every Friday, these children carry manure from home. After morning lessons, the whole class joins together to mix the manure with water and smear it across the floor with their bare hands. It’s their way of sealing in the dust and creating a smooth surface that can last, at best, a week. Classes end early on Fridays so the smell can settle before Monday morning.

“My name is Margaret. I want to become a nurse, but this school doesn’t allow me to follow that dream because of the way it is. Every Friday, we miss our lessons because we have to smear the classrooms. Our uniforms get dirty from the dust. That’s why we want a new school to be built.”
